HUGO MATHA Art on your Shoulders

French fashion designer Hugo Matha successfully creates two-in-one clutches, handbags and backpacks, somewhere between design pieces and fashion accessories, and brings together estheticism and functionality.

Art blossoms anywhere and takes on every shape. From clutches to handbags, Matha’s pieces are made to measure. Everything he produces participates in elevating the notion of French craftsmanship: the exceptional materials he uses – iguana or crocodile skin, sandstone, metal threads, plexiglas, for one, as well as his collaborations with carpenters, which call for noble woods.

Each piece is assembled and produced in the South of France, where he was born. The clean lines and sharp cuts illustrate his hunger for architecture. The work is so precise, it falls in the sculpture category. Placed on a table, the handbag becomes a work of art and transcends its accessory status. When worn, it fulfills its primary function.

Matha’s artistic take on what he does is closely tied to his sensitivity, which led him to years in Applied Arts before graduating from the Art, Design and Fashion Duperré School in Paris. After a six-month internship in Shanghai, the French designer turned towards the luxury world, working with Jean-Charles de Castelbajac. With the financial support of his home region, Matha gave birth to a first collection of clutches that put him on the map, and at Leclaireur.
