PLAY Comme des Garçons Avant-Garde is forever

Comme des Garçons Play is a basics line built in parallel to CDG. Its iconic brand logo, a red heart, with its eyes wide open, is the work of New York artist Filip Pagowski.

Rei Kawakubo has steered the brand's wheel since its creation. Born in 1942, she started working as a freelance stylist, and launched her own brand in 1973, shortly before opening a store in Tokyo. In 1981, she showed one of her collections in Paris, at the Hotel Intercontinental, triggering controversy and amazement with her deconstructed silhouettes. The Comme des Garçons style is often described as « anti-fashion », like that of Yohji Yamamoto’s, one that opens the doors of both modernity and avant-garde. It appeals to those who love a committed, original wardrobe, toying with construction and cerebral shapes. Martin Margiela, Junya Watannabe, Ann Demeulemeester and Helmut Lang have all named Rei Kawakubo as one of their most important inspirations.
