« Intelligent, fragile yet confident ». For Fall/Winter 2017, Rok Hwang’s idea of what a woman might be, comes with a first collection of garments that merge purity and deconstruction, blurring the boundaries between the physical and the abstract.
The Korean designer, who grew up in Austin, Texas, uses the natural silhouette of the body to bring forth the personality, with attitude, in a mix of sharpness, rawness and sensuality, fueled by the coolness and innocence of youth.
Snap fasteners on the sleeves, unstitched jeans, restitched along the vertical line of the legs, sliding sleeves that go the extra-length, asymmetrical shapes, layering… : every garment’s features emphasize Hwang’s quest for innovation in anything he creates. Even the duffle-coat seems thought like a jigsaw puzzle, made to fit the body in so many ways.
To give the garment its definitive shape, Rok Hwang establishes a tactile relationship with the fabrics. His fingers are his eyes. Some garments require no less than several dozens of fittings before the designer considers his work complete. Rok Hwang finds his main inspiration in his everyday life, and in the most mundane, universal situations. The designer focuses on construction, lines and on the idea that encapsulates his collection, to create pieces able to withstand the passing of time and trends.
