Fornasetti’s Divine Comedy

From one generation to the next, and for the last 50 years, Fornasetti has dipped its senses in all of Art’s shapes and forms, constantly redefining the very meaning of what interior decoration might carry.Piero Fornasetti by ugo mulas Barnaba Fornasetti by giovanni gastel Leclaireur

The House’s latest collection embodies its so very particular rapport with creation: Barnaba Fornasetti was recently commissioned with the stage design for Mozart’s Opera, Don Giovanni, directed by Davide Montagna and presented for the Milan Triennale. From that adventure, he’s given birth to an entire body of sumptuous artworks.

Born in 1913 in Milano, Piero Fornasetti enrolled in the famous Brera Academy as soon as he came of age, only to be expelled for his inappropriate attitude; young Piero simply did not cope well with authority. He spent his life protecting his artistic autonomy, both as an artist, and as a man. His friendship with the great architect Gio Ponti nurtured his curiosity for design. Thought as an atelier, ruled by creativity and craftsmanship, the Maestro established his first factory in his hometown. The House grew and expanded via a solid and mixed heritage, filled with countless items and original artworks, a source of constant inspiration for Barnaba, Piero’s only son. Fornasetti‘s house muse is the 19th-century opera singer Lina Cavaliera. In 1952, leafing through the pages of a book, the painter discovered an amazed and candid expression on a face which would become, ever so rapidly, the face of many a pieces., fueled by his undying attraction and passion.
The House offers incredible wealth of creations, which were featured in an exceptional retrospective at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs en 2015. Though he died in 1988, Piero Fornasetti is now known as one the most creative artists of the 20th-century.
