On the edge and forever
Fashion designer Rei Kawakubo is the leading figure behind Comme des Garçons.
Born in 1942, she started as a freelance stylist before launching her own brand in 1973 and opening a shop in Tokyo. In 1981, the first collection, with its deconstructed pieces, was presented at the Hôtel Intercontinental in Paris, and was met with controversial admiration. Often described as « anti-fashion », much like Yohji Yamamoto’s, Rei Kawakubo’s style is both modern and avant-garde. Her fashion has appealed to those who know how to rock strong, original, cerebral pieces. Martin Margiela, Junya Watanabe, Ann Demeulemeester and Helmut Lang have named her as one of the designers who’ve inspired them the most.
The Spring/Summer 2017 Comme des Garçons collection is filled with Victorian hints, ruffles, dots and mid-calf pants or skirts, assembling decades like fragments of a same piece.
